Apple announces virtual WWDC 2021 event for June, begins accepting Swift Student Challenge submissions

Apple has officially announced that its Worldwide Developers Conference 2021 will take place from June 7 to June 11. Like last year’s event, it will be held virtually.

Among the expected products are launches of iOS 15, watchOS 8, and other updates to its operating systems. It’s also possible that Apple will mention its new iMacs and AirTags, although a spring event could release updated iPads and AirTags prior to this.

The company has also begun accepting submissions to this year’s Swift Student Challenge, wherein young developers are challenged to create a Swift playground that showcases their coding abilities. From now through April 18, students can submit their Swift playground to the Swift Student Challenge. Winners will receive exclusive WWDC21 outerwear and a pin set.

While WWDC 2021 will be held online once again, Apple is donating money to support its local communities. $1 million will be donated to SJ Aspires, an education and equity initiative launched by the City of San José. SJ Aspires offers a performance-based scholarship program that educates students about their college and career choices, and provides individual mentorship and advising.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
