Apple to include Stolen Device Protection feature with iOS 17.3 update

While you may have just installed iOS 17.2 on your iPhone and are still feeling it out, it’s a given that iOS 17.3 has entered the beta stage and is being worked on.

That being said, one of the most interesting features of Apple’s upcoming iOS 17.3 update is a previously unannounced feature called Stolen Device Protection. When enabled, the feature will make it harder to perform certain actions, including changing an Apple ID password, or passcode, or viewing your other passwords, when away from a familiar place. The feature has the potential to add yet another layer of security to your device as needed, especially when an iPhone passcode can be gleaned by anybody who carefully watches the user enter it.

The Stolen Device Protection feature also limits what can be done on an iPhone with a user’s six-digit passcode when not at a familiar location like your home or work. The intent is to make it harder for thieves to access important information on a user’s iPhone or lock them out of their Apple ID. The feature can be found under Settings > Face ID & Passcode in the beta.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
