Qualcomm to create 5G chips for mid-range devices

Chipmaker Qualcomm will expand use of its 5G chips into mid-priced phones, marking a shift from their being placed almost exclusively in top-end phones.

The transition is expected to happen in 2020.

The current 5G chips, which are expected to be faster than current 4G and LTE chips, have typically been outfitted from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 series. Qualcomm stated in remarks during the IFA tech fair in Berlin that it plans to add 5G capabilities to its lower-cost Snapdragon 6 and 7 series devices. This, in turn, would place the chips in the market for smartphones from Motorola, Xiaomi, Opportunity, and Vivo that retail in the $300 range.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
