Rumor: Apple may release M3 Ultra-based Mac Studio around mid-2024, updated Mac Pro may not be released around this time frame

If you’re hankering for an M3 Ultra-based Mac Studio, the rumor mill has it coming out this year around the WWDC timeframe, albeit without a refreshed Mac Pro to accompany it.

According to Trendforce, based on data from The Elec and a report from ICsmart, TSMC customers that include Apple will increase orders for second-generation 3nm process wafers by up to 80 percent utilization by the end of 2024. Apple will introduce new chips using the process later in 2024 like the M3 Ultra and A18 Pro.

Given that the report doesn’t specifically mention a new Mac Pro using the M3 Ultra chipset, this could be either an accidental omission or an intentional statement.

The report itself appears to originate from the supply chain and matches up with Apple’s historical release pattern as well as previous reports on the matter.

Apple surprised the world by introducing three M-series processors at once, and ahead of the expected cadence during its “Scary Fast” event. The M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max were all revealed in late October 2023.

Given Apple’s previous patterns, the M3 Ultra will likely be announced during WWDC in June.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
