Rumor: iPhone 15 Pro models to feature Wi-Fi 6E support

The rumor mill’s claims that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with the latest Wi-Fi 6E technology seem to be gaining strength.

In January, a credible leaker, “Unknownz21” shared leaked documents revealing Wi-Fi 6E on the iPhone 15 Pro models. On Thursday, a research note from Barclays analysts further supports the previous rumor.

According to analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley, Apple will limit Wi-Fi 6E to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will keep the regular Wi-Fi 6 standard units.

The Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E protocols represent significant advances in wireless technology but cater to different spectrums and use cases. Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax, operates in the traditional 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. It’s designed to improve data transmission efficiency in these bands, making it suitable for things like streaming and gaming.

Wi-Fi 6E, on the other hand, expands the capabilities of the Wi-Fi 6 protocol by including operation in the 6 GHz frequency band. This addition means Wi-Fi 6E can access a broader spectrum, reduce congestion, and offer more channels for data transmission. This, in turn, could offer a band that’s less crowded, thereby reducing interference and enhancing performance.

Apple has also already added Wi-Fi 6E to many recent devices, including 2022 iPad Pro models and 2023 Mac models. If the rumors are true, the iPhone 15 Pro lineup will be the first iPhone model to support Wi-Fi 6E.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
