  • IEEE 802.11ay Wi-Fi standard could offer four times the bandwidth of predecessor, help facilitate communication between nearby devices

Per the rumor mill, the next generation of iPhones could support a new protocol known as “IEEE 802.11ay.”: The technology could help aid communication to devices in close proximity to each other.

The IEEE 802.11ay standard offers four times the bandwidth of its predecessor, and adds four streams of multiple reception/transmission. The protocol also uses the 60GHz spectrum

The IEEE 802.11ay standard offers four-times the bandwidth of its predecessor, adding four streams of multiple reception/transmission. It also uses the 60GHz spectrum. However, while it is very interesting technology, it is still only really in draft form at the moment. MacRumors picked up on the Japanese reported that suggested the technology could be used with tools like AirDrop to allow communication between iPhones or other nearby Apple devices.

The technology is said to only be in draft form at the moment, but could evolve into something useful and interesting.

  • Reception buildings, snack areas begin to surface at Campus 2 construction site

    campus2reception

Apple has begun building its reception buildings at its new Campus 2 headquarters.

While a fair number of images have surfaced from drone footage of the “ring” building, Apple is currently finishing up two reception buildings; one with glass walls topped by a simple roof and the other, seen above.

The two reception buildings will play a gatekeeper role for visitors; a couple of “outdoor food stations” inside the circular courtyard; and a decidedly modern maintenance shed. A city staff report includes some renderings of the proposed designs, which hadn’t been previously disclosed.

  • Consumer Reports signs off on iPhone 4S, cites antenna issue as resolved

If you can win over “Consumer Reports”, that’s saying something.

Per Boy Genius Report, Consumer Reports magazine, which stated that it refused to “recommend” the iPhone 4 due to antenna-based issues, on Tuesday proclaimed that the redesigned antenna system on Apple’s iPhone 4S is no longer affected by the dreaded death grip.

“In special reception tests of the iPhone 4S that duplicated those we did on the iPhone 4, the newer phone did not display the same reception flaw, which involves a loss of signal strength when you touch a spot on the phone’s lower left side while you’re in an area with a weak signal,” the independent consumer shopping guide stated on its blog.

While the new antenna allowed the iPhone 4S to score higher than its predecessor in Consumer Reports’ ratings, the improvements still weren’t enough to top Samsung’s Galaxy S II, the LG Thrill or the Motorola DROID BIONIC.

If you have two cents to hurl in regarding the iPhone 4S’ current antenna and its reception, please let us know what’s on your mind via the comments.

  • Rumor: China Unicom to launch iPhone 4 on September 16th

Wireless carrier China Unicom may officially launch the iPhone 4 on September 16th, a local source claims. While the carrier is generally believed to have set plans in motion, it has yet to formally announce details. A launch on the 16th would come just a little over a month after the availability of the first Wi-Fi-equipped Chinese iPhones.

Per Caixin Online, the source mentions some other information about the launch. In order to get an iPhone 4, people may be required to order online in advance. The Chinese model is also expected to suffer from the same reception problems as other versions, but Unicom will allegedly be offering cases as free gifts. In other countries free cases will cease to be available for iPhone 4s bought after September 30th, barring an extension from Apple.
