A new study released from health startup Cardiogram and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) suggests that wearable devices like the Apple Watch, Fitbit and others are able to accurately detect common but serious conditions like hypertension and sleep apnea.

Cardiogram and UCSF had previously demonstrated the Apple Watch’s ability to detect abnormal heart rhythms with 97 percent accuracy. The new study states that the Apple Watch can detect sleep apnea with a 90 percent accuracy and hypertension with an 82 percent accuracy.

At its most recent earnings call, Apple stated that its Apple Watch sales had grown 50 percent year-over-over, although the company has never revealed exact sales numbers. Estimates from Canalys suggest that unit sales almost hit 4 million for Apple Watch in the third quarter.

Canalys stated that the cellular version of the Apple Watch Series 3 has proven popular enough for demand to outstrip supply. The company also stated that wireless carriers have been surprised by the demand for the device.

Canalys estimated that roughly 800,000 of the 3.9 million Apple Watch units sold in the third quarter were the LTE model.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are almost upon us.

Chinese telecom companies cut Apple Watch Series 3 access to LTE, cite government security concerns

China has terminated LTE access for the Apple Watch Series 3 without explanation. Per the Wall Street Journal, all three major carriers in China have closed off LTE access, apparently over the government’s security concerns over the device.

The WSJ reports that LTE functionality was available on China Unicom at launch, but new subscriptions were terminated just a few days later. Existing users are so far unaffected, it says.

It’s thought that the government was concerned about the fact that it could not track the new Apple Watch Series 3’s user base given its use of an eSIM device.

Apple releases watchOS 4.0.1 update, works to address Wi-Fi/LTE connectivity issues for Apple Watch Series 3 devices

Apple’s watchOS 4.0.1 update is out and it works to improve the reliability of LTE cellular connections without an iPhone nearby.

Apple Watch owners can now download watchOS 4.0.1 via the official Watch app on a paired iPhone. Release notes accompanying the software say that it addresses the Wi-Fi bug that could prevent LTE connectivity when near a public hotspot.

Given that LTE connectivity provides a significant drain on battery life, the Apple Watch tends to opt to use Wi-Fi networks when possible. Prior to the watchOS 4.0.1 update, the Apple Watch failed to identify public Wi-Fi networks with portals, which cannot be accessed without accepting terms and conditions. Without a browser or full-fledged iOS operating system, watchOS is unable to connect to such networks.
