Apple announces September 14 “California Streaming” event, new iPhones, AirPods expected

Apple on Tuesday announced that it will be holding a special event on Tuesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. pst. As usual, the event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

As with WWDC and last year’s fall events, the event will be held digitally with no members of the media invited to attend in person. It’s thought that Apple will likely provide pre-taped segments for each new product that’s announced.

Where this year is concerned, the rumor mill expects Apple to announce the iPhone 13 models, the Apple Watch Series 7, and possibly the AirPods 3 earbuds. It’s also thought that Apple will announce new MacBook Pro notebook models as well as new iPads this year, although the company is expected to hold multiple fall events to announce new and updated product lines.

Apple’s ‌iPhone 13‌ models will be similar to the iPhone 12 models with few design changes. Apple is planning to release a 5.4-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ mini, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌, a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro, and a 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max.

The general design will be the same, but we are expecting a smaller notch. There will also be some improvements to the cameras, with Apple bringing sensor-shift optical image stabilization to the whole ‌iPhone 13‌ lineup, introducing a better Ultra Wide camera for the Pro models, and improving the cameras of the ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro to bring it in line with the Pro Max.

The next-gen iPhone is expected to feature a faster A15 chip, faster 5G technology, and a 120Hz ProMotion display expected for the Pro models. Other rumors have focused on an always-on display, larger batteries, and more storage space.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is thought to incorporate the first redesign of the Apple Watch to date. The new Apple Watch could have a flat-edged design that better matches the ‌iPhone‌ models, and it could be thinner with more available display space.

A new lamination technique will bring the display closer to the front cover, and casing sizes are expected increase to 41mm and 45mm, up from 40mm and 44mm. A faster S7 chip is expected, and there could be a bigger battery, but there are no new health sensors coming this year.

It’s rumored that Apple’s manufacturing partners have experienced production issues with the new Apple Watch, so there could be a delay in initial availability or very tight supplies at launch.

The third-generation AirPods are expected to incorporate a design that’s closer to the AirPods Pro, and it’s thought that silicone tips are a possibility. It’s also been speculation that the new AirPods will feature shorter ‌AirPods‌ Pro-like stems, but will continue to be a more affordable option without Active Noise Cancellation.

Either way, we’ll know after September 14.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
