Apple expands AppleCare+ purchase options for new Mac buyers in Australia, Canada, and Japan

Apple has expanded some AppleCare+ options for new Mac buyers in Australia, Canada, and Japan, allowing them access to the same annual plan available to US customers.

A year after it made the option widely available in the US, Apple has now brought its annual AppleCare+ pricing to more countries. Instead of the previous three-year upfront commitment, new Mac users can have all of the benefits of AppleCare+ insurance for an annual fee. The new fee is higher, although it features a smaller upfront outlay.

In Canada, for instance, AppleCare+ for an M2 MacBook Air can now be bought for CA $99.99 (US $77) per year, or CA $269 (US $207) for three years. That makes the annual option US $24 more expensive over the three years.

While there are minor differences in how the AppleCare+ plans are handled in their respective countries, the overall benefit remains the same. Under the plan, users can claim up to two incidents of accidental damage every 12 months, and be liable for a service fee instead of the entire repair cost.

New Mac buyers will have the option to either purchase AppleCare+ at the same time that they purchase their new Mac, or within 60 days of purchase. If the plan is bought after the purchase of the computer, the Mac will have to be inspected at an Apple Store location before the AppleCare+ plan purchase is approved.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

hello! Please note that a very important un-advertised distinction of Apple’s yearly renewable Applecare Plus plan is that it is NOT transferable, and basically there’s NO pathway for any new owner to get a continuation of Applecare! (unless the computer is sold before the one year warranty expires, and the new owner takes a trip to the AppleStore for inspection, and to begin their own plan).
If you think this through, obviously this policy can greatly compromise resell value on a Mac, and leave lots of unsuspecting Mac users stranded. This fact needs to be brought to light in order to save millions of unassuming MacBook customers from making a BIG mistake by choosing 1-year renewable Applecare Plus… vs. the 3-year plan, which CAN be extended with a new yearly subscription AFTER the 3yrs have expired. (Most concerning, this policy will affect users of lesser income, who might not be able to afford the 3 year plan)

I’ve written a draft for an article that explores all the ramifications of this, which i’d love to see published on sites like yours. Please let me know if you might be interested, thank you! Greg
PS: I’ve been reading PowerPage for over 20 years, and actually randomly met Jason OGrady at BurningMan 2002 when he and his girlfriend rode on my Eklektro Art Car, LOL), cheers!
