Apple releases Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 11

Never knock a good Java update.

On Tuesday, Apple released Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 11, a Java update for its Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) operating system.

The update, an 81.9 megabyte download, uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled “Missing plug-in” to go download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.

As always, the update can also be located and installed via the built-in “Software Update” feature in Mac OS X.

The Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 11 fix requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to install.

Ya can’t knock a useful Java update.

On Tuesday, Apple released its Java 2012-006 update for its Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) operating systems. The update, a 67 megabyte download, uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled “Missing plug-in” to go download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.

As always, the update can also be located and installed via the built-in “Software Update” feature in Mac OS X.

The Java 2012-006 update requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.7 or later to install.

Flip4Mac updated to 3.0.0.126

Early Wednesday, software developer Telestream has released version 3.0.0.126 of Flip4Mac, its QuickTime components package which allows for Windows Media files to be viewed, imported and converted under Mac OS X. The new release, a 62.1 megabyte download, includes the following fixes and changes:

New Features:
- Introduced the new Flip Player application for playing, editing, and transcoding video and audio. Flip Player supports unique features such as dimming the background, cropping video, and creation of iPhone ringtones. It also supports exporting to Apple and Telestream applications, exporting to Apple devices, and Windows Media. Flip Player replaces the WMV Player application.

- All software is now signed with a digital certificate from Apple to address security and anti-malware requirements in Gatekeeper.

- Added support for the application/x-ms-wmp mime type.

- Added 64-bit Core Audio support for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Fixes:
- Flip4Mac will now continue playing even if it encounters corrupted audio packets, as long as there are enough valid packets to prevent a perceptible problem with the audio.

- Fixed a bug that prevented Flip4Mac from opening local wvx files.

- Fixed a bug that prevented MMS stream playback and resulted in a -19160 error.

- Fixed potential crashes and memory leaks.

- Fixed various issues with QuickTime X Player 10.2 in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Flip4Mac 3.0.0.126 is available for free but can go as high as US$179 depending on the version purchased. The new version requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.7 or later to install and run.

Mozilla releases Firefox 16.0 update

On Tuesday, Mozilla.org released version 16.0 of its Firefox web browser. The new version, a 33.3 megabyte download and adds the following fixes and changes:

New:
- Firefox on Mac OS X now has preliminary VoiceOver support turned on by default.

- Initial web app support (Windows/Mac/Linux).

- Acholi and Kazakh localizations added.

Changed:
Improvements around JavaScript responsiveness through incremental garbage collection.

Developer:
- New Developer Toolbar with buttons for quick access to tools, error count for the Web Console, and a new command line for quick keyboard access.

- CSS3 Animations, Transitions, Transforms and Gradients unprefixed in Firefox 16
Recently opened files list in Scratchpad implemented.

Fixed:
- Debugger breakpoints do not catch on page reload (783393).

- No longer supporting MD5 as a hash algorithm in digital signatures (650355).

- Opus support by default (772341).

- Reverse animation direction has been implemented (655920).

- Per tab reporting in about:memory (687724).

- User Agent strings for pre-release Firefox versions now show only major version (728831).

Known Issues:
- If you try to start Firefox using a locked profile, it will crash (see 573369)
For some users, scrolling in the main GMail window will be slower than usual (see 579260).

- Pointer lock doesn’t work in web apps (see 769150).

Firefox 16.0 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.

Google Chrome updated to 22.0.1229.92

You’ve got to hand it to Google: they’re consistent with their updates.

Late Monday, Google released a beta of version 22.0.1229.92 of its Chrome web browser. The update, a 44 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:

- Contains a number of stability fixes, including an issue with multiple profiles on Mac OS X 10.8.2.

- It also contains a fix for text display on the Mac.

Security updates listed below:
- [$1000] [138208] High CVE-2012-2900: Crash in Skia text rendering. Credit to Atte Kettunen of OUSPG.

- [$3133.7] [147499] Critical CVE-2012-5108: Race condition in audio device handling. Credit to Atte Kettunen of OUSPG.

Adobe releases Flash Player 11.4.402.287 update

On Monday, Adobe released Flash Player 11.4.402.287 for Mac OS X, a 11.9 megabyte download via MacUpdate. The new version is for Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265 and earlier versions and adds the following fixes and changes:

- Fixes for critical vulnerabilities identified in Security Bulletin APSB12-22.

Apple releases supplemental updates to Mac OS X 10.7.5, 10.8.2 operating systems

Late Thursday, Apple released supplemental updates for both its Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) and OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) operating systems.

The Mac OS X 10.7.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 fix, a 2.1 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Resolves an issue that may cause Time Machine backups to take a very long time to complete.

- Addresses an issue that prevents certain applications signed with a Developer ID from launching.

- The Supplemental Update is recommended if you installed the Mac OS X Lion v10.7.5 Update (build 11G56).

The OS X 10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0 fix, a 27.9 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Resolves an issue that may cause certain Japanese characters to appear incorrectly in Mail.

- Allows Safari to access secure sites when parental controls are enabled.

- Addresses an issue that may prevent systems with more than 64 GB of RAM from starting up.

- Resolves an issue that may cause DVD Player to unexpectedly quit.

The updates can be found, downloaded and installed via Mac OS X’s built-in Software Update feature and require Mac OS X 10.7.5 and Mac OS X 10.8.2 to install and run, respectively.

On Thursday, software developer Quark released version 9.3.1.2 of its QuarkXPress design application. The 364 megabyte update, which can be downloaded here, adds the following change:

- This free update for App Studio users includes new versions of App Studio Factory and Issue Previewer for iOS Simulator. This release is not compatible with QPS 9.2.

QuarkXPress 9.3.1.2 requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.8 later to install and retails for US$799.00 for the full version.

Adobe releases Lightroom 4.2 update

It’s hard to argue with a useful update.

On Wednesday, Adobe released 4.2 of its Lightroom image editing program. The new version, a 426 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

- Album Support within the Revel Publish Service.

- Additional camera support for 20 new cameras including the Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i, Fujifilm X-E1, and Sony DSC-RX100.

- Corrections for issues introduced in previous versions of Lightroom.

Adobe Lightroom 4.2 retails for US$149.00 and requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later to install and run.

Opera 12.10.1615 public beta goes live, now available for download

Late Tuesday, Opera Software released a public beta of version 12.10.1615 of its web browser. The new version, a 20.1 megabyte download via MacUpdate, boasts the following fixes and changes:
- Extensions, improved

Several new and improved APIs are included in this version of Opera including:
- API for URL filtering

- Context Menu API

- Screenshots API

- Resource Loader API

- High-resolution Display Support: Improved support for all high-resolution displays, including Apple’s new Retina Displays is included in this beta.

Web Specifications Support:
- Opera 12.10 beta will include changes in the Opera Presto 2.12 engine up to core-integration-point 388.

- SPDY: Support for the SPDY (“Speedy”) network standard is included in Opera 12.10 beta. SPDY was designed to cut down the time it takes for a webpage to load, while reducing some of the security risks posed by HTTP.

- CSS3 Gradients, Transitions, Animations, and Transforms: All members of these specifications are now available without the -o- prefix and have been updated to the latest published versions.

- CSS Site Compatibility: To improve site compatibility and interoperability, Opera 12.10 beta also introduces aliasing for a selection of prefixed CSS properties.

- Add an href attribute to the widget element in config.xml.

Fixes and Changes:
- The OS X version of Opera has been reverted to in-process plugins while stability issues stemming from the out-of-process plugin system are investigated and resolved.
