Rumor: Apple could release iPhone 12 MagSafe battery pack with “reverse charging” feature

Per noted Apple product leaker Jon Prosser, Apple is currently working on a MagSafe-compatible battery pack that will be compatible with current iPhone 12 models. Prosser also indicated that one version of the battery pack will feature “reverse charging,” which could also be able to charge an ‌iPhone 12‌ while also charging AirPods from the other side at the same time.

Prosser incorporates a mixed track record as to Apple’s forthcoming products, and stated that his source is “not sure” if Apple will release one or both of these battery packs. Prosser has also stated that he plans to release renders of the battery packs based on information from his source.

Rumors of Apple’s work on iPhone 12 battery packs surfaced in mid-February following the release of the second iOS 14.5 beta, which mentioned a mysterious “battery” pack in the code base.

Bilateral wireless charging was rumored for the 2019 prior to the iPhone 11 release, but it did not end up being a feature that Apple implemented because the company wasn’t able to make it work. Two way wireless charging would have allowed an iPhone to charge another ‌iPhone‌ or to charge a small accessory like the ‌AirPods‌.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
