Rumor: Apple working on creating an iPad docking accessory to power a home hub

Apple’s iPad could become a dockable home accessory.

Per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple may be looking to push the iPad even further as a home accessory. As of 2021, Gurman reported that Apple was working on a new product category that combines Apple TV, iPad, and HomePod features in a single device. The idea would be to create something that could compete with home devices like Amazon Echo Show.

Gurman’s Power On newsletter also claimed that Apple is still exploring the notion of combining the iPad with a speaker hub, and has developed prototypes of an iPad docking accessory that would provide a similar experience, but without the need to create a product that can only stay in one place at home. With Apple’s version, users could simply attach their iPad to the dock/accessory to allow it to be the centerpiece of a home hub experience, as seen with the Charging Speaker Dock for Google’s Pixel Tablet.

Gurman also noted that sources said the new accessory might be introduced “as soon as 2023.”

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
